I hate to admit it, but I have no idea what this is ... getting old I suppose.

SSD is a solid state drive, which is flash-based storage instead of a conventional spinning hard drive. You can use it in either your desktop or laptop computer.

SSD advantages are that they run virtually silently, use less energy, and... SIGNIFICANTLY (multiple times) faster than hard drives. That means quicker boot times, faster applications and games, less time waiting.

Solid state drives, much faster than traditional hardrives and there is no 2.5” or 3.5” disc spinning around inside. Definitely worth looking into if you want near instantaneous boot times or faster loading.

Normally I would be all over some cheap SSDs but I would need much higher storage capacity and I only have PCI ports left to use.

That’s nice, but I already got one you see.

(Or many. It’s our replacement drives for teachers. They’re-a very nice)

The down side is that to run silent, it generates a KGB sleeper agent who may or may not start sabotaging the whole thing to prevent it from defecting.

Thanks for that - I should probably replace my terabyte spinning backup drive with something like this. I need decent backup.

You really want to back up to magnetic. When a solid state drive goes, it’s gone. With a magnetic, you can have some warning before total failure.

So the Mac says this:

Model Name:Mac mini

Model Identifier:Macmini6,2

Processor Name:Intel Core i7

Processor Speed:2.3 GHz

Number of Processors:1

Total Number of Cores:4

L2 Cache (per Core):256 KB

L3 Cache:6 MB

Memory:16 GB

Boot ROM Version:MM61.0106.B09

Any suggestion what I should buy as a reliable backup? Thanks.

I’d do a USB 3.0-compatible external enclosure (you can go Firewire 800, it’s about the same speed, but likely won’t be compatible in the future) and stick a big honking magnetic drive in there. See:

Hard Drive Enclosure (Alternative) and A big honking 3.5 drive (Alternative)

Then, slap a nice, fast SSD inside the mini, you can even get a 2.5 inch enclosure for the old internal magnetic one, and go nuts! (Really, any combination of USB3 enclosure and magnetic drive will work. Even prebuilt ones are ok.)

Oy - do I have to open the thing up? Makes me afraid.

How I wish I could. This is probably the next upgrade needed for my resuscitated MacBook Pro. Being unemployed at the moment has me using what I have available to keep a roof over my head and wheels. If you're open to trades of any sort let me know...

For the external backup? Nope. If you wanted to upgrade the main drive to an SSD (speed gains), you do have to open it up for that. That’s tricky, but not impossible. (Still harder than it should be.)

My first mini you had to use a putty knife. Now the back just twists off.
